Edenverse explained

Page history last edited by Sora G. Silverwind 5 years ago

Edenverse is a set of plotlines, characters, backstories, interpretations, and other details derived from the premise of humanizing nearly every non-human Bomberman character in existence.[1] As a result, Edenverse comes off more "realistic" in tone than equivalents set in Erinaverse or a more general canonverse, involving more detailed violence, mentions of sex, more explicit language, an emphasis on character psychology, and other things.[2]

The main plot of Edenverse spans two stories: Fateful Meetings (a novelization/bastardization of Bomberman 64: The Second Attack) and its direct sequel, Darker Side of Light. Unofficially, there are many other stories that explore ideas that would fit into Edenverse but which aren't strictly considered canon to it.

The name of the 'verse is derived from Eᴅᴇɴᴀɪ, the term for the mortal realm in the celestial tongue.

History

Fateful Meetings was originally conceived years upon years upon years ago as a tongue-in-cheek retelling of TSA, sort of like how The Kokiri Mafia was a tongue-in-cheek retelling of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.[3] Except that FM had less mafia and more gratuitous breakage of the fourth wall. At some point, it defaulted into this quintology of Bomberman fics set within the same continuity, starting with Rukifellth and Lilith's story prior to TSA and then going through the events of TSA with FM. It was followed by Magic Knight Erina (which I actually began writing prior to FM, though it didn't originally start out as a magical girl story) and its two sequels, the first being more direct and the second being set further along into the future. As you can guess, initially the magical girl theme from MKE played quite a strong role in this timeline, but after considering how dark Rukifellth and Lilith's story was in comparison to FM and MKE, I tried to compensate by incorporating -- in varying degrees -- serious elements into the other stories. This, then, could be considered the proto-Edenverse.

Besides the affectionately parodical and cracked-out elements, one of the other main features of Fateful Meetings was that all of the characters except for Pommy were featured in normal human forms conceived by yours truly. This was related to my lack of drawing ability at the time: it was (sort of) easier for me to draw the characters (by which I mean the Elemental Knights) as humans than it was to draw their original forms. (Amazingly, the characters have more or less retained my initial designs through the years.) However, this ended up facilitating the changes that would produce Edenverse proper.

When I returned to Fateful Meetings after a few years of chasing after Psynergetic plotbunnies, I'd really only intended to clean up the chunky wordvomit of my younger years, fixing wording, pacing, characterization, and some of the more horrible jokes I made. As I followed through on the logical implications of some of my changes, however, I ended up introducing darker themes (for example, Bomberman's regret and frustration over having to kill the Astral Knights) that I felt uncomfortable just glossing over when the characters were actually "human" and not just superdeformed cartoon things. It became apparent that my cracktastic retelling had mutated into something far more ominous than its original puerile parodical origins; while still a cracktastic retelling, the crack was of an entirely different nature. I also returned to MKE around this time, rewriting the first two intro episodes and planning to finish the damn fic at some point before I died a sudden but inevitable death at the age of 30.[4]

At this point, for the sake of my sanity, I did something I should've done years ago and split things into Edenverse (a.k.a. SRS BSNS; previously referred to as the generic "Soraverse") and Erinaverse (a.k.a. ALL 4 TEH LULZ; previously and still sometimes occasionally referred to as "chibiverse"). Doing so made it easier for me to juggle the many ideas I had about the Sorafied version of bomberverse without feeling like I was completely abandoning the cuteness that drew me to the fandom in the first place. Many of the stories and related details of proto-Edenverse have either been abandoned, reworked, or repurposed as completely original stories.

Footnotes

  1. There are exceptions to this, with Pommy being the major one. Natia, Birdy, and Zaroot have also essentially retained their original forms, although they were humanoid-ish to begin with anyway...
  2. For a given definition of realistic, anyway. There's only so much one can do with extrapolating on a world as ricockulous as Bomberverse at large.
  3. If you actually know what fic I'm talking about, I have totally just dated myself.
  4. At the time of writing this, I am 26 and MKE is barely on its fifth episode. I'm sure that speaks for itself.
